About Me

Educational History:

I graduated from Broken Arrow High School in 1978. My roots run deep in Broken Arrow. My grandmother went to school there and my mother graduated from there as did all of my children. After spending a year at OSU, I took some time off to work. I graduated with honors from the University of Tulsa in 1985 with a B.S. in Accounting. After spending a couple of decades in business and manufacturing, I decided to take my life in a completely different direction and I started back to school. I blame my son getting his driver’s license and leaving me with too much time on my hands. While working full-time, I went back to college and graduated with honors in May of 2012 from Northeastern State University with an M.A. in English Literature. I also obtained a Certificate as a Writing Center Director. Thus began my journey as an English teacher.

Degrees and Certifications:

I have certifications in 5th-12th grade English, 5th-12th Speech and Drama and Career Tech.

Professional Development:

AP Summer Institute for Language and Composition

AP Summer Institute for Literature and Composition

Pre-AP Summer Institute for Sophomore English

Pre-AP Summer Institute for Middle School English

Shakespeare Set Free Romeo and Juliet

Shakespeare Set Free Midsummer Night’s Dream

And over 200 hours in other professional development courses.

Current Position:

I have been teaching at Midway since 2015. I currently teach 8th-12th grade English. I am also the Yearbook Advisor, High School Academic Team coach, and co-coach the Cheer Team. In the past, I have taught Elementary and High School Drama.

Previous Position:

My first experience as a teacher was as a part-time Adjunct English Professor at Tulsa Community College. I taught Composition I and Developmental writing part-time for six years.  My first teaching experience in secondary education was at Porter Public Schools where I taught middle school Reading, high school English and middle and high school Humanities. While I was finishing up my Masters at NSU, I also volunteered for two years at Tulsa Public Libraries as a literacy tutor. I specialized in ESL. One of my students was an older Korean gentleman who turned out to be a former Korean Literature and Language Professor. I helped him prepare for his citizenship exam.

Family Information:

I live with my husband, Gregg Walton, on our farm near Lake Eufaula State Park. We have four grown children and ten grandchildren. Grandchildren are the best! They make it worth putting up with their parents as teenagers! We have two very spoiled dogs: Sassy and Beau. Sassy and Beau are sister and brother blue heeler/border collie mixes. We also have two cats: Bellatrix and Skeeter, two bunnies: Twist and Sugar, three goats: Van Gogh, Margo, and Henry, three horses: Sundance, Mazie, and Doc (our mustang we adopted), a small herd of cattle including a bull named Mo that loves to have his head and ears scratched, and a small flock of chickens and ducks!

Personal Information:

Besides taking care of our many animals, I love to garden. I also love to read (I am the English teacher for a reason!).  I love live theater and sports, and I enjoy doing yoga and swimming.
